Permanent exhibitions run from prehistoric rock art and Xiongnu/Turkic periods through the Mongol Empire, Qing vassalage, revolution, socialism and contemporary democracy. The costume and shamanic/Buddhist object halls are especially useful for decoding the symbols you'll see in the north.
